During the recent 28th annual Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, shared several updates with
the hundreds of travel advisors, wholesalers, tour operators and
suppliers in attendance. A total of 7,560 rooms are in the pipeline for the island destination from now until 2020, he said, also
noting that Jamaica will see 1.3 million airplane seats for the
upcoming winter season, including approximately 38,000 more
seats from the United States and 42,400 more from Canada.
The Tourism Minister also announced that there are
planned infrastructure improvements at both Kingston’s
Norman Manley International Airport and Montego Bay’s
Sangster International Airport. This all adds up to more choices
and greater convenience for couples looking to get married or
honeymoon on the island. Here is a roundup of hotel developments that have taken place over the last several months.
The Excellence Group launched its first property this summer, on a private peninsula in Trelawny Parish. Just 30 minutes
from Mobay’s Sangster International Airport, the 325-suite
Excellence Oyster Bay is the first of two hotels to be built by
the group. This Victorian-style, waterfront, adults-only resort
offers all-inclusive accommodations; a variety of restaurants and
bars; three swimming pools and four outdoor hot tubs; and a
spa / fitness center. A complimentary wedding package is avail-
able to couples booking an Excellence Club Ocean View Junior
Suite (or higher category room) for seven nights or more. A
selection of customizable nuptial plans are also offered, along
with a number of honeymoon options.
Set for a January 2019 opening, the new S Hotel Montego
Bay overlooks Doctor’s Cave beach on Montego Bay’s “Hip
Strip.” Created by Chris Issa, owner of Kingston’s Spanish
Court Hotel and a noted Jamaican entrepreneur, the 124-
room S Hotel will include bars, a café, a pool scene, a Sky Bar
and Lounge, an international restaurant, a spa, a boutique and
a gym. The hotel’s signature Sky Suite will include 20-foot
ceilings and a loft bedroom, while the Presidential Suite will
have three bedrooms and a living / dining room. Also, the
hotel’s swimming pool will be framed by swim-out cabanas.
Dining choices at the resort will include a beachside rum
shack offering rum flights with an education about aged
Jamaican rums. The pool bar will use top-shelf spirits and
organic herbs to design craft cocktails and classics, while an
all-day menu offers healthy snacks, made-to-order sandwiches,
salads and fresh juices.
The Sky Bar and Lounge, exclusively for Sky Club
Suite guests, includes seating areas and sky-line beds for day
and night rooftop relaxation and a modern cocktail menu fused
with a Jamaican tapas menu prepared with fresh, locally grown
ingredients. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the main
restaurant will serve artisanal Jamaican and international cuisine with a custom selection of wines, Champagnes and a full
range of specialty house-made local drinks. Guest can also enjoy
regional and international seafood, and a wide variety of locally
S Hotel Montego Bay also offers meeting and event spaces.
Concierge services will offer tours and excursions, and a resort
boutique will sell accessories and ready-to-wear clothing from
popular Jamaican designers.
Also on the “Hip Strip,” the new Spanish Court Montego
Bay has 125 rooms, most with views of Doctor’s Cave Beach.
Each will have spa-like bathrooms with roman tubs and sauna
showers, and some will also have exterior balconies and, on the
ground level, private plunge pools. For weddings and receptions,
the Sky Terrace, Mountain Deck, and Cabana Pool and Lounge
may be booked privately, subject to availability.
Skylark Negril Beach Resort, the new 28-room sister property to the Rockhouse Hotel, occupies two acres along Negril’s
famous Seven Mile Beach, including 220 feet of beachfront.
Beaches Negril has recently upgraded its categories of rooms
and suites with nine new offerings.
